League History

History of UFFL I

The original UFFL was created in 1995 by league commissioner, Dave Torreano. The league was founded in El Paso, TX and consisted of ten butterbar lieutenants attending the Air Defense Artillery Officer Basic Course at Fort Bliss.

1995: The first UFFL champion was Matthew Lambert.

1996: The league then moved to Fort Bragg, NC in 1996 with a group of new owners, all soldiers from 3rd Battalion (Airborne), 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment. Brian Thorne and the Mustangs dominated the league on his way to the title.

1997: The following year, 1997, the Wolverines and Dave Torreano ("Da Commish") defeated Brian in the championship game and claimed the crown.

1998: UFFL expanded to twelve teams in 1998 and went online for the first time. The Big Dawgs and owner Joe Reither crushed the regular season champion Ridglea Sharks and owner Kevin McBride in a battle of the league's top two teams.

1999: In 1999 the league went to an auction style draft and after the smoke had cleared, Kevin McBride and his Alvarado Sharks were the latest UFFL Champions, narrowly defeating Jac Steer and Steers Beers 120-116 in the Championship Game. The homefield advantage was the difference for the Sharks.

2000: 2000 was a blast from the past as two of the original founding owners hooked up in the title game. Dave Torreano and Jax Wolverines' trio of Marshall Faulk, Peyton Manning, and Marvin Harrison proved to be too much for Brian Thorne and his Mustangs. Jax Wolverines is the first team in UFFL to win the championship twice.

2001: Boomer Philbrick and Huddle of Greatness replaced CB Severson and the not so venemous Cobras in 2001. New blood in the 2001 Championship Game as Mark McDaniel and the Regular Season Champion San Antonio Hellboys defeated Mike Obstgarten and Five Buddhas of Doom 117-108.

2002: Robo Watson and Robos Splatterers migrate from UFFL II to replace the 1999 UFFL Champion Kevin McBride and Alvarado (Ridglea) Sharks. Kevin joined the league back in 1998. The 2002 UFFL Championship Game was the closest ever. Chuck Anderson and Megalomaniacs upset Brian Thorne and the Mustangs by 1.7 pts.

2003: Ken Daube and The Underdogs had their most successful season ever, winning the Regular Season Championship with a 11-2 record. But it was two Wales teams that met in the Championship Game. Brian Thorne and the Mustangs defeated Mark McDaniel and San Antonio Hellboys behind Priest Holmes' MVP performance. Brian joins Dave Torreano as the league's only two-time Champions.

2004: Mark Edgar and The Terminators dominated the regular season, finishing with a 12-1 record. His one loss season ties the all-time record for best regular season record. The 2001 Champion and 2003 Runner-up Mark McDaniel and San Antonio Hellboys defeated The Terminators in the Championship Game 138-131. Mark M. now joins Brian Thorne and Dave Torreano as two-time league champions.

2005: Brian Thorne and Dave Torreano met for the third time (1997, 2000, & 2005) in the UFFL Championship Game. Both teams finished the regular season with 11-2 records. Brian and the Regular Season Champions Mustangs defeated Jax Wolverines 144-131. Brian now holds the most UFFL Championships with three.

2006: Albert Leach won his first UFFL title with the Floating Fecal Logs (10-3). Fecal Logs defeated the Regular Season Champion Mike Obstgarten and Five Buddhas of Doom (12-1) 118-107 behind Steven Jackson's 42.7 points.

2007: After winning the wildcard matchup, Brian Thorne and Mustangs (8-5) defeated the Regular Season Champion Smashmouth Lemmings in the semis. The Championship Game pitted the last two champions against one another and it turned out to be a classic. The Mustangs defeated Albert Leach and Floating Fecal Logs (9-4) by less than one point, 116-115. This was Brian's league leading 4th UFFL Championship ('96, '03, '05, '07).

2007: After winning the wildcard matchup, Brian Thorne and Mustangs (8-5) defeated the Regular Season Champion Smashmouth Lemmings in the semis. The Championship Game pitted the last two champions against one another and it turned out to be a classic. The Mustangs defeated Albert Leach and Floating Fecal Logs (9-4) by less than one point, 116-115. This was Brian's league leading 4th UFFL Championship ('96, '03, '05, '07).

1999: In 1999 the league went to an auction style draft and after the smoke had cleared, Kevin McBride (Crnerblitz) and the Alvarado Sharks were the latest UFFL Champions, narrowly defeating Jac Steer and Steers Beers 120-116 in the Championship Game. This was payback for Kevin after taking the 1998 Ridglea Sharks to a 12-1 regular season only to lose in the Championship Game to Joe Reither and the Big Dawgs.

The 1998 Season

1998: After three years as a local league, UFFL went online for the first time in 1998. Kevin McBride and The Ridglea Sharks dominated the regular season finishing 12-1 but were trounced in the game that mattered most, the UFFL Championship. The 1998 UFFL Champion was Joe Reither and the Big Dawgs. After winning the UFFL Championship, the Big Dawgs migrated to UFFL IV where they won championships in 1999 and 2000 to date.
